The Maher thing is a red herring. She got the board position for the usual reasons of being mates with the right sorts (left sorts) of SF/Silicon valley. She's not technical in the slightest.

Everyone I know (and I work in cyber-security) believes Signal is secure and lacking in back doors. Plus if signal does have a hole in it, this chat group was a remarkably stupid one to expose it.

As I wrote on my post on the topic, https://ombreolivier.substack.com/p/signalgate-thoughts?r=7yrqz , almost 100% certainly this was a human derived act. Now was it incompetence or malice is less clear, but I don't think it was devious hack either way

From NordVPN: "...backdoors within encrypted apps are being exploited all the time. In 2020, security firm Cellebrite (used by the FBI, the Myanmar police, and governments), announced that it was able to circumvent Signal’s end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp was cautioned over its lack of end-to-end encrypted backups, and if you don’t make your Telegram chats “secret,” they won’t be encrypted."

However, I doubt this screw up had anything to do with the security of the app. Rather I think this was either accidental or willful negligence. I think the right thing to do is for Waltz to resign. I don't see how President Trump could trust his judgement in the future.
