When Britain had its first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, it was not because she was a woman. In fact she was described as "the only person man-enough to run th conservative party". Out of other leaders (Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Angela Merkel, and recently many more) I can't think of one who was elected because she was a female.
